Summary Of The Three Day Blow:

The Three Day Blow is a dramatic story written by Ernest Hemingway. This story describes the states of mind of its main characters.

The setting of The Three Day Blow is very significant because it offers an opportunity for the characters to carry out different actions. It is significant also because it reflects the three different state of Nick’s (main character) mind.

It was a windy afternoon of autumn. The rain had just stopped and the forceful wind of autumn was blowing through bare apple trees. There was a cottage at the top of the hill. The cottage had front porch, back porch, back porch, living room, dining room and a loft. There were garage, a chicken coop and second growth timber. A beautiful scene of woods, a lake and orchard could be seen standing on the front porch. Most of the events in this dramatic story takes place inside the cottage specially in the living room and the dining room.

The weather condition has quite a lot to do with the sequence of events. The weather condition offers the characters Nick and Bill an opportunity to sit in the cottage and have conversation on serious topics drinking alcohol. It had just stopped raining which allows Nick to go to the cottage of the Bill. As the wind was blowing forcefully outside, they could do nothing except to imprison themselves in the cottage and have conversation. The weather condition was quite appropriate for them to drink Irish whisky and scotch. Drinking of alcohol enabled them to have conversation on various topics freely and frankly. Therefore, whatever was done and said in this dramatic story is due to the weather condition.

The weather condition is significant also because it reflects three moods of Nick. The first day blow reflects the confused state of Nick’s mind. The second day blow reflects the pain of separation experienced by Nick. While the third day blow reflects Nick’s hope for reunion with Marjorie.

Thus, the weather condition doesn’t only offer a setting for the character to speak their dialogue and to carry out their actions; it also reflects the mental action of its main characters.
